People sometimes ask me how they can get their hands on the Medifast shakes. There seems to be a perception that you need to have a directive or prescription from a doctor or belong to a clinic in order to be able to buy or purchase the shakes. I heard from someone who said: "I really want to try the Medifast shakes. Actually, I'm interested in all of the foods, but I really want to start with the shakes. Since I can't find them in stores, I'm assuming this means that I need to make an appointment and be evaluated at a clinic? And am I right in assuming that I will also need a prescription, especially for the shakes that address health issues joint health or menopause?" I'll answer these questions in the following article.
This reader had the incorrect perception that many have. Although you have to go to the company's website instead of a pharmacy or super market, anyone can order Medifast shakes. You don't need to go to a clinic and you do not need a prescription as the shakes are food rather than a medication. And although the specialty shakes like joint, coronary, and women's health options are designed to address health issues, you do not need any special orders or prescriptions to order these either. In fact, you can order any of the drinks that you want including the 55, the 70, and the ready to drink without any problems at all. I think the perception about needing to go to a clinic or doctor stems from the belief that this diet might help you lose weight by including stimulants like ephedrine or herbs that stimulate your metabolism. This isn't the case. None of the items (including the shakes) include stimulants.
Now, the exception to this would be any drinks in the momentum line, which is meant to rev your metabolism. Some items on the momentum line do contain 100 milligrams of caffeine and 90 milligrams of EGCG, which is the antioxidant found in substances like green tea. This amount of caffeine is about the equivalent of a cup of coffee. If you want to avoid the caffeine or the EGCG, then you would just avoid the momentum line and go with the regular shakes.
But to answer the question posed, yes anyone can purchase Medifast shakes. You don't need any special documentation or permission, although they are probably not available at your local store and you may have to log onto to computer to place an order. Basically though, all you do is chose what shakes you want, create an account, chose the flavors you want and then check out. The entire process only take a few minutes and shipping is generally pretty fast.
